We have been lucky to arrive in Yellowknife when the daylight/darkness
cycles are close to southern Ontario. Currently I could not tell you what time the sun comes up because my work is a
five minute walk from home, which means I get up an hour later than when I
lived in Ontario. I am assuming it comes up before 6:00 a.m. since it is light
when I get up around 6:30.
While I couldn’t tell you about the sunrise, what we have
been enjoying is the sunsets. Our condo development is situated on a hill that
looks over Great Slave Lake and the City of Yellowknife. At first, we were
disappointed because our condo is on the side that faces the city rather than
the lake. However, we quickly realized this may be the better side after all.
The sun sets right off our balcony and while we have only been here three
nights, every night is an amazing sunset.
The weather has been cooperating and we can sit out on our deck and
watch the sun go down over the city. We only brought two outdoor chairs with us
to the condo thinking we wouldn’t need all of them, but the sunsets are
something everyone enjoys watching. When Brent gets back from his road trip we
will bring the other two out.
The sunset seems to take forever. I suspect this is just because
we have a largely unimpeded view of the skyline. When you are in a house, you
lose sight when the sun drops below other houses. Since we are up fairly high (I
will discuss my hike up the hill everyday in another post) we can see past the
airport. The airport is the farthest large structure on the other side of the
city. The sunset easily lasts an hour and
a half right now.
The colours almost look like a rainbow. The sky can go from
a deep warm blue to bands of green and then melts into oranges, pinks and
purples. Last night there were northern lights in the deeper parts of the
sunset while the pinks and purples lingered farther down the skyline. I am
enjoying every second of the sunsets because I
know it will be a long and cold winter. Savoring the fall sun’s beauty
while we have it is probably the most enjoyable part of my day.

Sounds like you are really appreciating all that the NWT has to offer. Sending you best wishes and positive vibes while you continue settling in your new home.
