"Hell yeah", is the atheist's equivalent to "Amen". I mention this as not everyone might have grown up in the Ottawa Valley- or it seems rural towns everywhere that embrace this idiom. It indicates, like Amen, an emphatic agreement with a statement.
Hell Yeah Yellowknife is a Facebook page devoted to only good things that happen in Yellowknife. It is a page to celebrate living in Yellowknife. No griping, whinging or moaning allowed. It is an uplifting page where you can hear about stolen bikes being recovered by eagle eyed residents, wallets being returned, coffee being paid for at Tim's or today- Aiden being given a part for his shop project.
Brent and Aiden had gone to a plumbing supply store to get the part required to finish his shop project.
While waiting Brent struck up a conversation with a contractor who was buying a lot of merchandise that was being retrieved from the stock room. The guy listened to why Brent and Aiden were at the store and then Brent was called up to place his order. Unbeknownst to Brent the contractor went to his truck and grabbed the part Aiden needed.
He gave it to Aiden but, they had already purchased an entire kit only for this one part. The contractor chided the guy
behind the desk and Brent's money was returned!
I did lots of research about Yellowknife before accepting my position. While I didn't come across this particular site, I did come across lots of information that said what great people the residents of Yellowknife were. And it is absolutely true. It reminds me a lot of what small towns used to be like before big box stores and cell phones.
I noticed that Hell Yeah sites for other cities exist- I would encourage people to create one for your own community. Too often we get bogged down in complaining about traffic (or mini buses in Grenada), the weather, politics... we forget to appreciate our community. Which is really about appreciating each other. Random acts of kindness happen everyday, but we only seem to hear about random acts of violence. Let's try to create some balance, and perspective in the world. Who's with me? Can I get a "Hell yeah"?
Amen.
